Skanco staff complete centurion walk
Skanco’s Operations Manager, Andy Gosnell competed in the National Race Walking Championships at the weekend and in the process completed the 100 miles centurion walk.
Andy, who is a regular local Parish walk competitor, decided to go one better by walking in a national event and completed the race in 11th place in 21 hrs and 21 mins and now joins the ranks of centurions with his allocated centurion’s number 1035. He also picked up a silver medal for coming second in the 45 age category RWA championship.
This year the event was hosted by the Isle of Man Veterans athletics club at the national sports centre track in Douglas.

The event attracted 80 competitors, many from the mainland as well as competitors from Germany, Australia and a large contingent of walkers from Holland. To complete the centurions walk, competitors must complete the 100 mile course within 24 hours or, any competitors who still feel able can continue for as long as possible after 100 miles. There was also a supporting 20 mile race which attracted 120 competitors.
The centurion’s race started at 2pm on Saturday and continued until 2pm on Sunday, with the 20 mile race starting at 10pm on Saturday night.
The race itself was won by Sean Hands who defended the title he won at Kings Lynn last year in a time of 19 hours 16 mins and the 20 mile supporting race was won by Jon Constandinou.
