After a well-earned holiday Rachael dropped in to see us and brought along her medals from the recent island games and told us about the events that got her the gold medals.
“Gibraltar was my 7th Island Games but it still feels as special as the first. I feel so proud when I race with the 3 legs on me. I started off the week off by winning the 1500m final in windy conditions so unfortunately, I wasn’t able to record a fast time.
Up next was my 800m heat which was the morning after my 1500m final so I had tired legs for this one. I choose to sit in behind other runners for the first lap and then make my move with 200m to go to get the automatic qualification for the final.
Then came the final day of racing. I was already buzzing after watching the guys in the Isle of Man team smash the half marathon in the morning.
I got myself ready and then lined up, bang the gun went off. I started steady then after 200m I saw no one was wanting to take it on so I hit the front and went through the bell in record pace. I then had to dig deep and powered down the last 100m. I could see the clock ticking away and when I crossed the line I had a new Island games record.
I didn’t have long to celebrate before I had to go into the girls 4×4 relay. I ran the second of the four legs and ran my heart out to get us into second place. We won in a new Isle of Man record but we just missed the games record by 0.03 secs, so that was frustrating but we were all made up with the win. What a week.”
Next up for Rachael is the women’s league races in Birmingham and then later this month, the last big event of the season, the British Championships, where Racheal will be mixing it with all the top British athletes such as Laura Muir. Well done Rachael on a fabulous season so far.
